I am back in London. I have had a couple more bouts of dysphonia, caused by me over extending myself.
Zahir is traveling, hand holding a nervous client. It happens. 90% of what we do is straight forward traditional design. When we get into that fun 10% there is more risk. Most of that risk is financial, thus nervous clients.
I am sort of running the London office with Z gone. I had a video conference call with the home office. I went for about fifteen minutes about the projects the office was on. Then when I asked a question I realized no one was paying attention to the content of what I was saying.
They were so amazed at hearing my new voice that they stopped listening. To hear is passive, listening takes work.
Big boss apologized and asked me to repeat what I said. The briefing lasted about a half hour. That is the longest and loudest these people have ever heard my voice. There were a few cracks and waivers but afterwards he told me he was happy with my improvement and how I am adapting.
I just wish Z could have witnessed it. If he could, he would have been giving the brief. Catch twenty-two.
My voice is getting stronger. Best it has been since it was stolen. I am so happy!

ReplyDeleteI have been up all night long. Z is not happy, but he understands I do not sleep when he is not here. I see a little white pill in my future tonight. Going into a meeting in about 30 minutes and I am absolutely knackered as my hosts would say.

DeleteHe actually TRIED canceling a late business dinner with a client. I took a nap in my office between meeting this afternoon. The couple flew from Egypt here to work with ME! Big boss corrected him. When it comes to sustainable and survivable homes, I am becoming a star with the firm.
The couple saw the homes I designed in Iran. They wanted to see I could top it on their property in Egypt. “Same but bigger. But, with MUCH finer finishing.”
They both smiled when I told them, “For the record you can do ANYTHING with the budget on this project.”
I was so tired I hadn't realized I was signing as I was speaking until the main client asked what I was doing with my hands.
When I told them I was functionally mute until my surgery last month, they were pleased. I apologized for signing. The minder grimaced when the client held my hand, “This was your existence for so long. It is good to see the butterfly, and know it’s journey.”
Just got home showered and changed. “Minder-Boy” had my sleeping pill and watched me take it. Chatted with Z. Now it is bed time.

It is weird I am normally out cold for eight with the white pill. He laughed when I said I didn't want to go to the kitchen for a snack. If I do the "Minder" will start nagging.
Going to sleep in Edinburgh tonight. Mr Minder was a firm NO on a tour of the city tonight. I guess he is right better to be sharp and fresh in the morning.

The first meeting of the day could have gone better... Thankfully it was NOT my client. The bigger guys are coming back to the office. They are questioning everything I have done in their absence.
ReplyDeleteSadly, it has been without checking their work FIRST. Just got the word that the BIG boss is flying in tomorrow to "fix" things. Everyone who has wanted to stand in Z's footprint are now quaking. I get to go home early to prep our guest flat for him.
It is good to be Z's boy.
Short day for me... Met the big boss at the heliport rode with him and got him set up in our guest space. Made breakfast then he told me to stay home today.

The other managers were double-checking my work, forgetting that the big boss had been looking over my shoulder while they were away.
